A person has died after being hit by a train in Northumberland .

All services between Carlisle and Newcastle were suspended following the incident near Hexham on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.39am, and British Transport Police has since confirmed a pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Police officers were called to the line close to Hexham station at 10.39am today following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended the scene but sadly a person has been pronounced dead.

"Police are currently working to identify the person and inform their family."

"The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Northern Rail had warned passengers services may be cancelled or delayed by an hour as a result.

The service was expected to resume in both directions from 12.46pm.
