Plans to demolish and rebuild part of Kenton Bar Primary School have been unveiled.

A whole new block will be built for re-house the junior school as the old sixties building in use now is deemed to be too dilapidated to repair.

The school, which is a feeder for Kenton School secondary, is run by SMART Multi Academy Trust.

The plans have not been formally submitted to Newcastle City Council yet but developers have took the first steps to get the scheme off the ground.

Documents filed with the local authority read: “The proposed development is a half school replacement which seeks the construction of a new predominantly single storey junior school which will replace the existing junior teaching block.

“The existing junior teaching block was constructed between 1967 and 1976 and is beyond economical repair and will be demolished after the replacement is complete.”

Although the building will be mainly one storey high, there will be taller sections to accommodate the hall and kitchen.

According to developers DPP Planning, they’re aiming to avoid having to have classes in cabins on the school yard.

The planning document reads: “The existing school will be in operation for the duration of the construction phase.

“In order to maximise the project funding and to minimise disruption the aim is to avoid the decant of pupils into temporary accommodation.”

The application also sets out plans for two new play areas and a new layout for pedestrians accessing the car park.
