When darkness falls, it happens.

For months now, a weird noise has filled Hexham’s night sky.

What’s causing it is a mystery - and the hum, which you can listen to in the video above, is making local’s lives a misery.

“It sounds like a phone has been left off the hook,” moans one mum.

“Some people say it sounds like someone is practicing for an evacuation, others have said it sounds like an alarm.

“But nobody knows where it is coming from and it is driving me mad.”

She’s not alone.

Neighbours in Abbey View say they notice it as soon as their homes fall silent.

“It is every single night, and the other day I even heard it during the day,” added a resident.

“It goes on for hours and hours and it is getting annoying now.”

They say the noise is making them ratty and tired.

“Even with the window closed you can still hear it,” adds one 28-year-old.

It has sparked rampant speculation around the market town.

Some have said it could be the Egger site. Others the fire station.

None have proved to be correct.

And the mystery doesn’t look like it is going away any time soon.

A Northumberland County Council spokesperson confirmed there had been no reports of anything which could offer an explanation.

And enquiries around the market town have seemingly drawn a blank.

Some, like Michelle Ackland, have turned to Facebook in an attempt to find the answer - and to try and get a good night’s kip.

“It is causing me and my daughter a lack of sleep,” said Michelle, who took to social media to try and find the sound’s source.

“It really is frustrating because I don’t know where it is coming from - or who to contact.”
