Durham University is preparing to move forward with plans to develop a state-of-the-art business school.

The institute wants to relocate from its current location on Mill Hill Lane to Durham city centre on Elvet Waterside.

The university says the new £70m building will improve the riverside location and complement the site's historic features and natural surroudings.

The purpose-built business school will create cutting-edge research facilities and enable business events and conferences to take place.

Professor Susan Hart, the Dean of Durham University Business School, said: "The proposed state-of-the-art building will provide exceptional facilities not only for our students but also for the local community and business.

"The school is already a centre of entrepreneurship and innovation and this investment will enable us to further drive collaboration and business connectivity for the region and beyond.

"Elvet Waterside will create more capacity for us to continue to inspire globally-focused, ethically-minded business leaders of the future."

Members of the public will have a chance to find out more on the proposed development on March 6 at a community event.

People will be able to feedback their comments and views on the plans in Durham Town Hall between 1pm and 7pm.

Professor Stuart Corbridge, vice-chancellor of Durham University, said the building is an excellent opportunity for the city.

He added: "The proposed development will fully regenerate a derelict brownfield riverside area and provide access to landscaped open spaces.

"This exciting development proposal will enable us to enhance our contribution to the local economy, and to deliver on the economic and academic growth priorities set out in the University’s 2017 -2027 Strategy."

The business school is the latest multi-million pound development that is part of the university's 10-year programme that will see it invest £107m in its science building, colleges and education programme.
