Tyneside welcomed 2019 in style with a stunning display of fireworks that lit up the sky above the Quayside.

The show began at the stroke of midnight, with scores of people gathered along the banks of the Tyne to watch the celebrations.

Earlier in the evening, families headed towards the Newcastle Civic Centre

to enjoy a programme of entertainment and watch New Year's Eve fireworks at 6pm.

Then the midnight display, organised by NewcastleGateshead Initiative and NE1, and choreographed by outdoor arts company Walk the Plank, took centre stage along the riverside.

People saw the Tyne's iconic bridges and the impressive architecture all lit up in spectacular colours.

And many continued their celebrations with festive drinks and an array of food at the bars and restaurants along the Quayside.

Meanwhile, another fireworks display took place outside the Spanish City Dome in Whitley Bay.

The celebrations marked the end of a year which brought the Great Exhibition of the North to the region.

The 80-day arts festival, held over the summer, was packed with unique exhibitions seen by thousands of visitors. The Baltic centre and Sage Gateshead were among the host venues.

Prince William was among those who visited the event and saw the region's artistic talent on show.
