Tour of Britain 2020 postponed by a year

The Tour of Britain has become the latest sporting event to be delayed by a year as the impact of Covid-19 on sport bleeds into autumn.

Race organisers confirmed the eight-day stage race, which was due to start on September 6, will no longer be held in 2020.

The 2019 edition saw some of the world's finest riders race through Northumberland ahead of a thrilling finish in Newcastle city centre.

As well as the safety of athletes, concerns about crowds gathering at roadsides to catch a fleeting glimpse of the peloton have also informed the decision to cancel.

Last September, thousands came out in the North East to watch the third stage fly between Berwick and Newcastle and then to watch the race depart the Quayside the following morning.

The race route wasn't due to come through the North East this year but was slated to pass through Cumbria.

A 23-year-old man, who was located inside the address, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Now, police have arrested a second man on suspicion of murder as enquiries continue.

Detective Chief Inspector Shelley Hudson, the senior investigating officer on the case, said:

“We have now arrested a second man, aged 25 from the South Shields area, and he will be interviewed by detectives over the coming hours.

“We would like to reiterate that we are treating this as an isolated incident and we believe those involved are known to each and that there is no wider risk to the public.

“However, a visible policing presence will remain on Victoria Road as officers carry out a range of enquiries and offer any reassurance to residents.

“I’d like to thank those who have already come forward with information, and would ask anybody else who saw anything unusual in the area on Tuesday morning to get in touch.”

More people plan to drive following lockdown

Public transport use could be half normal levels following the easing of lockdown measures, with many people turning to their cars instead.

The Government has encouraged people not to use public transport if possible to help limit the spread of Covid-19. In a new survey of 3,000 people, about 50 per cent said lockdown had made them less likely to use public transport in the future.

The survey, commissioned by online parking marketplace YourParkingSpace, found less than three per cent of respondents expected their public transport use to increase.

Furthermore, 40 per cent said they were likely to drive more after lockdown, with just 10 per cent saying they would drive less.

New speedy check-out at Morrisons

A fast check-in and check-out initiative is launching in Morrisons' stores, enabling customers who want only a small shop to bypass queues of trolleys.

The new 'Speedy Shopping' option gets under way in the supermarket chain from May 13 to cater for those needing only a basket-load of items and it means that these customers can use a separate 'lane' to avoid the trolley queues outside its stores and then a quicker check-out once they've got what they need inside.

From today, Morrisons is going to introduce Speedy Shopping for customers doing smaller ‘basket’ shops at all of its stores - so that they can get in and out more quickly. A new separate Speedy Shopping lane will be introduced outside of Morrisons stores with three Speedy Shopping customers being invited in for every Big Shop trolley shopper. The new system will ensure customers wanting to shop for a small basket of essentials will queue for less time outside of the store, and checkout quicker once inside.

The idea is to get them in and out of the stores far faster.

In explaining the new system, a spokesman said that the company has introduced a separate Speedy Shopping lane outside its stores and that from this lane three customers for every one trolley shopper will be invited inside.
