One person has been taken to hospital following an early morning crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway near Berwick-upon-Tweed shortly before 3am on Saturday morning.

Police closed the road in both directions between the B1340 and the A1167 to clear the scene and carry out investigation work.

It was fully reopened by around 8am.

The North East Ambulance service sent crews along with a doctor and paramedic from the air ambulance service in a MERIT car, which operates at night when the helicopter can’t.

A spokeswoman for the NEAS said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision near Purdy Lodge at 2.46am this morning.

“We dispatched one double-crewed ambulance, a senior paramedic and the Medical Emergency Response Incident Team car.

“One patient was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

It is not yet known how many cars were involved or how seriously injured the patient is.

Northumbria Police have been contacted for comment.
