It was formed by 18 leading businessmen, including MPs and aristocrats, including the Earl of Durham and the Marquis of Londonderry.

The exclusive gents' club had close links Durham Light Infantry and its successor The Rifles and regularly hosted Crown Court judges' lunches and other society events.

A decline in its usage meant the club was forced to close in 2016 after 126 years.
