AC Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso has responded to the front page headlines in Italy that linked him with the Newcastle United job.

Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Gattuso had met with super agent Jorge Mendes to plan his next move and that the Magpies had cropped up in the conversation.

However, the former Rangers man, who has guided Milan into Champions League contention this season, has reacted to the stories circulating the Italian football circuit.

When asked about the meeting with Mendes, Gattuso said: "We often see each other, I like good food and to talk about football. Newcastle ? Unfounded rumours.

"I repeat, with Mendes, it is just a great friendship."

But despite having a contract until 2021, Gattuso has been tipped to leave Milan this summer.

United fans are desperate to hear news on Rafa Benitez's contract and with safety now secured in the Premier League one big obstacle has been overcome.

Toon chiefs wanted to get Benitez's contract sorted quickly last week but Benitez has continually mentioned June 30 and seems prepared to bide his time to wait for the right deal.
