Josh Maja was substituted 67 minutes into his Bordeaux debut as Les Girondins ended their four-match losing sequence with a derby win over Tolouse.

Having watched from the bench against Paris Saint-Germain eight days earlier, the 20-year-old January signing from Sunderland came in for his full debut in place of Nicolas de Preville, starting at the head of a 4-2-3-1 formation.

That meant Jimmy Briand dropping back onto the right wing, from where he scored the 82nd-minute winner.

Croatian Toma Basic gave Bordeaux a second-minute lead in the Garonne derby, and they were still holding it by the time Maja made way for Andreas Cornelius. Within minutes of Maja’s departure, Yannic Cahuzac had drawn the visitors level.

Briand’s ninth goal of the season secured a 2-1 victory for Bordeaux.

Bordeaux paid an initial £1.5m for Maja, although that figure could rise depending on how he performs in south-west France. Sunderland have also cleared the money they owed Bordeaux for the 2016 signing of Wahbi Khazri.

Academy of Light product Maja scored 16 goals for the Black Cats this season, his first full campaign as a senior player. The Black Cats replaced him with Will Grigg.

The victory keeps Bordeaux in 13th in Ligue 1, four points ahead of local rivals Tolouse.
