Sunderland should still have a big advantage over their League One rivals next season when it comes to squad value.
Last term, the total value of the Black Cats playing staff dwarfed that of the other sides in the division.
And while Ipswich and Bolton's relegation has cut the gap between Jack Ross' side and the others competing in League One in the coming campaign, the Wearsiders still have a healthy advantage on paper.
Football website transfermarkt values each player and then compares the total to see which squads are worth the most.
And their data values Sunderland's playing squad at £22.55m - well ahead of second-placed Ipswich on £18.27m.
Bolton come third on £14.3m - but then there is a big drop to Rotherham (£6.8m) and newly-promoted MK Dons (£5.67m).
Of course that only counts for so much - as we have just seen over the course of the last 12 months.
While promoted Barnsley and Charlton were ranked as the second and third most valuable squads respectively, eventual champions Luton Town were ranked down in ninth.
And Portsmouth, who finished above Sunderland in fourth place, were way down in 15th spot.
Lee Cattermole is Sunderland's most valuable player, according to the stats, at £2.5m. Of course the actual transfer cost is ultimately down to what clubs are willing to pay and comes down to supply and demand so actual figures will vary.
So for example, the Black Cats clearly rate Will Grigg higher than his £1.35m value below, and would be highly unlikely to sell him any time soon for less than the £3m they paid Wigan for his services in January.
It does give some indication as to how much Sunderland could boost their budget should certain players move on this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday have been reportedly interested in Cattermole, while several clubs are chasing Bryan Oviedo's signature.
Top ranked Sunderland players
Lee Cattermole - £2.7mThe experienced midfielder had another impressive season, scoring seven times for the Black Cats, but there has been interest in him so far this summer from the Championship.
Aiden McGeady - £2.25m
Ended the season as Sunderland's top goalscorer following Josh Maja's departure, and is widely thought of as one of the most talented players in the division.
Duncan Watmore - £2.25m
Has battled back following just more injury bad luck and could be a key player for Sunderland next season. Surely he is due some better luck.
Grant Leadbitter - £1.8m
A January signing from Middlesbrough, Leadbitter was in and out of the side before winning his place back for the play-off battles.
Bryan Oviedo - £1.8m
The Costa Rican international looks set to move on this summer, with Club Brugges and Rosenborg interested.
Will Grigg - £1.35m
An ankle injury curbed his impact after his big-money January move, but the Northern Ireland international will be looking to make a big impact this coming season.
Adam Matthews - £1.35m
The Welsh full-back will leave Sunderland this summer with his contract up.
Donald Love - £900k
Another season on the sidelines for the former Manchester United man, Love has almost become the forgotten man of the Sunderland squad.
George Honeyman - £900k
The skipper splits opinion among fans, but is a Jack Ross favourite and should be a key man again
Glenn Loovens - £675k
Not seen in action since December, Loovens could find himself even further down the pecking order should Sunderland sign more central defenders.
Max Power - £675k
The former Wigan man made a big impact this season with some important goals, but sometimes struggled to nail down a starting place.
Reece James - £675k
Another who could move on, the full-back was kept out of the side by Oviedo and Denver Hume following his return from injury.
Lynden Gooch - £675k
While his form dipped in 2019, Gooch contributed five League One goals and eight assists.
Ethan Robson - £450k
After impressing on loan at Dundee, many fans would like to see Robson feature more regularly for the Sunderland firs-team.
Chris Maguire - £405k
Someone capable of turning any game, Maguire has struggled to find the right place in the Sunderland starting line-up, and often does his best work as an impact sub.
Jon McLaughlin - £360k
The Black Cats goalkeeper was one of their players of the season and is surely worth way more than his valuation.
Jack Baldwin - £360k
The former Peterborough man lost his place in the side during the second half of the season, and wasn't even on the bench in the latter stages.
Dylan McGeouch - £315k
The Scottish midfielder admitted he has a big decision to make on his future after playing a bit-part role so far.
Charlie Wyke - £315k
An injury early in the season seriously hampered Wyke's impact, although a return of just four League One goals was below par.
Tom Flanagan - £225k
Another who's value is probably much higher in reality, Flanagan was the defender most used by Ross.
Luke O'Nien - £135k
Certainly O'Nien's value to Sunderland will be much higher after the former Wycombe man made the right-back slot his own.
Alim Öztürk - £90k
From a forgotten man to a key player in the play-offs, Ozturk eventually showed what he was capable of at the end of the season.
