Newcastle United's place in the Premier League is now officially confirmed after Cardiff's failure to beat Liverpool.

Former Magpies midfielders Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner hit the goals for the Reds to give them a 2-0 victory - and leave Cardiff 10 points behind United in the final relegation spot, with only nine more available.

It means that for the second consecutive season Rafa Benitez has guided the club to safety and also edged past the 40-point mark with games to spare.

But what now for the Magpies, and with three games left to play, what else can be achieved this season?

So what next for Rafa Benitez?

The Newcastle United manager says he is ready to talk about his contract extension.

There's been suggestions of a one-year deal over the weekend while a three-year offer has also been mooted recently.

Negotiations will take place with managing director Lee Charnley but with Mike Ashley due back from his Easter break, he will also want an update on what's happening.

After the 3-1 win over Southampton, Benitez said: "We have to talk.

"Everything that will happen between now and the 30 of June has to be good for everyone."

Is the club still for sale?

Mike Ashley, owner of Sports Direct

The short answer to that is yes.

Mike Ashley is still open to offers between the £300m to £400m mark, and with the club now confirmed as a Premier League outfit he will feel there is good value in his asking price.

Certain bidders pulled out of the deal in January when they felt the club were threatened by relegation, but they could now return.

But for the good of the fan-base, Ashley can't let that interfere with backing Benitez and hold back funds.

What's left to play for?

A top-10 finish now seems beyond Newcastle and they are likely to finish in a lower position than they did last year.

But the squad's seasonal aim was to finish at least 12th this year and they are still on course to do that.

Given each Premier League place is worth an extra £2million to the club United's money men will want to see more points posted on the board despite staving off relegation.

Indeed, the Magpies pocketed £21.3million for 10th place last season with 11th worth £19.3million and 17th - where United could still finish - worth just £7.7million.

Last season Newcastle netted 44 points and they can still better that as they sit on 41 points with nine more to play for.

How are season ticket sales going for next term?

Club officials say that there has been no noticeable decline in renewals so far.

Many of those who have a long-term season ticket deal with the club have not opted out.

However, keeping Rafa Benitez is the key to many snapping up their season cards again next season - and Ashley and Lee Charnley won't need to be reminded of that.

If Rafa Benitez does stay how much will he have to spend?

United chiefs believe that Benitez will have around £50million to spend on new players this summer.

Given that Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Joselu, Ciaran Clark, Javier Manquillo and Rob Elliot could all be sold, there is scope for extra funding too.

But it's control that Benitez is looking for, how that money can be spent and how quickly those new players can be signed up.
