Newcastle United take on Southampton this weekend knowing that they have almost achieved survival in the Premier League for another year.

The Magpies lie seven points above Cardiff City who occupy the last place in the relegation zone but Rafa Benitez is keen to make sure the club are mathematically safe from the drop.

The United manager had near full squad to pick from with only Florian Lejeune and Sean Longstaff absent due to injury, and will be looking to win their sixth home game from the last seven.

They quickly moved on from the defeat to Crystal Palace with a 1-0 victory over Leicester City last Friday, and the fans will be hoping to get back to winning ways at St James' Park.

Here's the predictions from the TV pundits and our team at Chronicle Live.

Mark Lawrenson - BBC Sport

I've seen quite a bit of Southampton recently, and they are playing well. They are not quite safe yet, but one more win should do it.

I don't think they will get it at St James' Park, but ultimately I think both teams will be fine in terms of staying up.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Southampton

Paul Merson - Sky Sports

Both teams are safe, and there should be goals. Nobody is under pressure, they are both safe. Why not go out and express yourselves? The problem is there is still plenty to play for in terms of money for the club - moving up three positions can bring in millions of pounds. Winning this game can really help for that push. The players though, will not feel that pressure.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-2 Southampton

Michael Owen - Bet Victor

Southampton have won four of their last six PL games but will probably think they need one more win before they can consider themselves safe from the drop. Eight wins from 18 games shows what a good job Ralph Hasenhuttl has done since he took charge at St Mary’s.

United picked up a very good three points at the King Power Stadium last Friday and they have won five of their last six home games at St James’ Park. I feel they may have to settle for a point against this progressive Saints’ side.

Prediction: DRAW

Lee Ryder - Chronicle Live

I think Newcastle will take the three points here against a Saints side who are haunted by the prospect of the drop.

Even though Cardiff have it all to do, Southampton know they can still get sucked in and won't be able to relax too much as they focus on taking at least a point.

But with the tension eased I think United will find their form here at St James' Park and pick up an impressive home win.

Prediction: Newcastle United to win

Mark Douglas - Chronicle Live

Two sides with the pressure off are likely to play out an entertaining game at SJP.

Southampton are a world apart from the side who struggled on Tyneside last season and I could see United being caused a few problems by the Saints.

But with the threat of relegation no longer present, United might take some of the shackles off.Could this be the day Almiron gets off the mark? It would take the roof off the stadium if it is.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-2 Southampton

Chris Waugh - Chronicle Live

Cardiff City’s result in midweek will keep both sides slightly concerned they could still be caught from behind, but I’m confident neither side will go down.

Therefore I am hoping that they can both express themselves some what and deliver us an entertaining, end-to-end affair at St James’ Park.

Southampton will fancy their chances because they will hope to press Newcastle high, but that will also suit the home side, too, with the Magpies able to counter-attack into space if the Saints do move higher up the field.

I think this will be close, but Newcastle should just shade it and move past the 40-point mark, guaranteeing their top-flight future once and for all.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Southampton

Andrew Musgrove - Chronicle Live

It's a hard one to call - both sides are virtually safe but both could do with a point more just be sure.

United were excellent against Leicester City, every single player worked themselves into the ground and it paid dividend as the Magpies came away with three crucial points.

Southampton have found a bit of form too, winning three of the last four Premier League games including a fantastic 3-1 win over high flying Wolves.

Nathan Redmond has impressed of late and will be full of confidence coming into this game - proving a big test for whoever is up against him.

But United should have enough to get back to winning ways at St James' Park - buoyed by that win at the King Power Stadium.

Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Southampton

Ciaran Kelly

Seven points clear of safety, and with a vastly superior goal difference, it's hard to see Newcastle getting dragged into the relegation dogfight with just four games to go.

But you only have to look at Brighton to see how a run of defeats can put you right back in there and Rafa Benitez will not want his players to take the foot off the gas after that impressive win at Leicester.

The Magpies' season petered out at this stage last season - they lost four of their last five games - and Benitez won't stand for that again. Plus there is still some prize money on offer the higher up the table Newcastle finish.

Newcastle did not play badly when their winning run at St James' Park ended last month and I can see them winning this one in a topsy turvy end of season clash.

Prediction: Newcastle 3-2 Southampton
