Steve Bruce is set to be named as Newcastle United manager and will have several players within his new squad determined to prove a point.

United are already out in China and take on Wolves later today in the first game of the Premier League Asia Trophy.

While Bruce has obviously not been out watching the players train, he'll will undoubtedly be given reports on the squad from Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn.

United have welcomed back several players who spent last season out on loan - and seven have travelled with the squad to China.

Some may argue that a new manager coming in doesn't automatically hit the reset button for any players not already get gametime - if these players were not good enough for Rafa Benitez, then they won't be good enough for his replacement - but nonetheless there will be a host of players determined to impress.

With only three weeks until the transfer window closes, United may struggle to give Bruce the proper chance to revamp his squad, and those players who have returned to the club may be given a chance to impress.

Of course, it's not just those returning from loan that will be looking to impress - every player should be stating their cases as to why they deserve to be in the starting XI.

Here are six with a point to prove.

Jonjo Shelvey

Shelvey only turned out 16 times last season in the Premier League, partly due to injury as well as simply not being selected.

He returned to the club's training ground in Benton early to start his fitness programme, and looks determine to prove his doubters wrong.

In our interview yesterday he hit out at those who had suggested his time on Tyneside was over, and with Bruce coming in, it will be a perfect chance to show why he deserves to be a central part of his side.

His passing ability is not in question but rather his consistency, but his efforts this summer have shown he is hungry to make his mark.

Isaac Hayden

Newcastle fans are in no doubt about the talents of Isaac Hayden - his form in the second half of last season even saw some suggest an England call-up.

Benitez had him part of his XI, perhaps one of the first on the team sheet, and in an ideal world United fans would carry that on through Bruce.

Hayden worked under Bruce while on loan at Hull City in 2015-16, but Arsenal would not sell the midfielder, and Bruce was strongly linked with taking Hayden to Aston Villa last summer - so he knows he's got a talent on his hands.

However, Hayden wants to leave Newcastle for personal reasons but as of yet no one has come in with a bid.

While reports will be going back to Bruce about who has impressed in training and in the games, make no mistake that scouts will be on the look-out to capitalise on the situation at Newcastle.

A good tournament for Hayden could eventually see a club come in for him.

Dwight Gayle

As of now, Gayle is United's only senior striker but his record of of 21 goals in 99 Premier League appearances isn't filling fans with confidence.

Gayle has confidence in his ability, and will be determined to show that he can lead the line for a Premier League side.

His 24 goals for West Brom last season - albeit in the Championship - re-emphasised he knows where the goal is. Playing against top-flight opposition in the next week is a good chance to test himself at a higher level.

Bruce is likely to change the set-up at Newcastle, and Gayle will be determined to show why he deserves a chance to regain that famous No 9 shirt.

Jacob Murphy

Murphy ended up joining Gayle on loan at West Brom but really failed to make an impact.

He did score two goals and get an assist but largely was looked upon as someone who never really got going at the Hawthorns.

Yet Murphy was always seen as one for the future - even at 24, it was felt he would need time to bed into the top flight. Some fans might argue that he never really got enough game time under Benitez, while others might say he just never took his opportunity.

With Kenedy back at Chelsea and Christian Atsu injured, Murphy has a perfect chance to show Bruce and the club why they don't need to go out and sign another winger but instead look to him to provide the goods.

Rolando Aarons

You would say the same applies to Rolando Aarons too - it's now or never.

Aarons has returned from a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday, where he worked under Bruce.

Bruce spoke highly of Aarons, commenting on how the winger gave The Owls something 'we haven't got' - picking out his energy and pace.

Aarons has had injury issues but now appears full-fit and with only Matt Ritchie and Murphy the other two wingers on tour, is likely to be given a chance to shine.

A player who burst on the scene in 2014, it's never quite worked for him but with two years left on his contract, and a clear fan in Bruce, it might be time to reach that true potential.

Elias Sorensen

With Ayoze Perez now at Leicester City, Joselu sold and Salomon Rondon unlikely to return to Newcastle, Dwight Gayle is United's only recognised striker.

Sorensen was called up to the first-team squad for the China trip at the last minute - Joselu had originally been named on the squad list - and he'll benefit from the step-up.

At 19-year-old, Sorensen is at an important point of his career; chuck him to the mix before he's ready and it could destroy him, but then waiting too long could also backfire.

The fact that he wasn't called up last week to train with first-team squad before heading out to China but instead went to Spain with the U23s, suggests the feeling is that it's too soon for him.

However with a lack of options up-front, a good week in China could change a few minds at senior level.
