Stewart Donald usually stays away from the football-side of business at Sunderland.

But one piece of advice for fans in his first few months at the club was spot on.

The Black Cats owner had his hands full trying to rebuild the club following successive relegations when he took over from Ellis Short in the summer of 2018.

The club was in desperate need of an overhaul and, while the fact they are still languishing in League One means Donald's popularity with the fanbase has plummeted, those first months in charge were full of optimism.

Newly-appointed manager Jack Ross brought a raft of new players to the club, including a forward by the name of Chris Maguire from Bury.

The Scottish playmaker had endured a disappointing season at Gigg Lane, netting just twice as he struggled for form.

But he had previously starred for Oxford United, where he had scored 17 goals and created a further 12 from the No 10 role.

And it was that campaign which prompted Donald to offer assurances to the Black Cats faithful that they had made a quality signing.

When asked about signing Maguire on Twitter, he said: “Hopefully you will give the lad a chance if he signs. I watched him for a while at OUFC & if he plays with the same level of intensity as he did for them we will have a player well worth his shirt. Let's see.”

And see we did.

He made an instant impact at Sunderland, scoring nine times and setting up seven goals in his first season at the club, despite being often used in various roles by Ross and not always starting matches. Indeed the final few months of that campaign were beset by injury after he broke his leg in February 2019.

However, it is in recent months that we have seen his true value to the side, with current boss Phil Parkinson employing Maguire as part of a three-pronged attack alongside Lynden Gooch and Charlie Wyke.

His 11 goals and 13 assists before the season was halted is testament to the fact he is now a vital cog in the Sunderland wheel, and should the League One campaign resume, any promotion hopes the club have will hang on his form.

Fans may be understandably questioning Donald on many fronts - but he got that one right.
