Sunderland will kick-off their 2019-20 League One season at home against Oxford United with the Black Cats handed a relatively tough start to the campaign.

After facing Karl Robinson's Us – the team supported by Sunderland's co-owners Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven – at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, August 3, the Black Cats then travel to newly-relegated Ipswich Town.

They are then due to play in the Carabao Cup in midweek before returning to Wearside to meet Portsmouth, the side that beat them in the Checkatrade Trophy final in March but who they saw off in the play-off semi-final last month.

After Pompey, Jack Ross' men also make a midweek trip to Rochdale before AFC Wimbledon visit the Stadium of Light, and the Black Cats round off August with a visit to Peterborough United, who narrowly missed out on a play-off spot last term.

Last season Sunderland won four of their five league games in August, collecting 13 points out of 15, and Ross will be hoping for a similarly fast start this time around.

Sunderland end their season with a final home game of the campaign against John Coleman's Accrington Stanley on April 25, before visiting the New York Stadium to take on Paul Warne's Rotherham United – one of the sides who were relegated from the Championship last season – in a noon kick-off on the final day, Saturday, May 3.

Other highlights of the campaign include the festive programme, which sees Sunderland entertain Bolton Wanderers on Boxing Day, before heading to Doncaster Rovers on December 29 and then visiting Joey Barton's Fleetwood Town on New Year's Day.

Over Easter the Black Cats will visit AFC Wimbledon on Good Friday, before Peterborough United head north to the Stadium of Light on Easter Monday.

All fixtures are potentially subject to change if selected for TV coverage, but here is the preliminary fixture list in full below.
