Most people don't need much persuasion to drop into a pub but now there's an added incentive to check out one particular Durham boozer.

A local watering hole has made a newly-announced list of the top 10 beer gardens to visit this summer - all chosen by members of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale.

It's part of the Summer of Pub campaign being run by the organisation in a bid to promote the British pub and encourage people to visit their local.

CAMRA members from across the country have shared their beer garden recommendations and the 10 best locations to enjoy an outdoor pint with friends have been identified.

And the 140-year-old Woodman Inn in Durham has made the grade.

Said to be well-known in the region for having "probably one of County Durham's best beer gardens", the pub is described as "a wonderful and generally peaceful place to relax with friends with a drink in the finer weather".

Based in Gilesgate, The Woodman Inn is a family-run pub selling the likes of real ales and keg beers and it features traditional entertainment such as a pool table, dart board and games.

It also hosts a weekly karaoke night and annual beer and rum festivals, while its large beer garden that so impressed CAMRA is landscaped, has colourful seating and an outside TV to screen the likes of big sport events.

CAMRA's list reflects all tastes and ranges from a traditional thatched country inn to a pub in Scotland boasting a castle view, with a focus on quality cask ales on tap.

Ben Wilkinson, CAMRA’s national director said the Summer of Pub campaign aims to remind people of the community role played by local pubs and to raise awareness about the financial pressures they are under.

He added about their attractions: "A good beer garden is the ideal setting to catch up with old friends or make new ones this summer.

"We know from academic research that people with a local pub have more close friends and feel closer to their communities - something we can all raise a glass to!"
