A look inside 10 of Newcastle's most historic pubs
Newcastle is blessed with watering holes that stretch back centuries, where generations of us have been enjoying a drink in historic surroundings
If you're battling through 'Dry January', well done.
Next weekend is the last one you'll have to sit through without a drink in town, a drink we're sure you're looking forward to.
Equally, many may have been avoiding the historic pubs of Newcastle in January, as they cut back on spending after the Christmas splurge.
To give you an idea of what you've been missing, and of where you could reward yourself with a drink next month, we take a look at some of the old Newcastle pubs and their stunning interiors.
They include the two oldest pubs in Newcastle City Centre, as well as some historic watering holes which have changed a fair bit over the years.
The Old George - Cloth Market/Old George Yard
The Old George is said to be Newcastle's oldest pub, with roots stretching back to 1582.
King Charles I was once a regular. The legend has it that Charles drank in the George while he was kept prisoner in Newcastle. Some say the eventually beheaded king's ghost haunts the pub, too.The Cloth Market pub is full of historical character, but it is still a lively place inside, especially on a match-day or weekend.

Newcastle is arguably it's most elegant on Grey Street, where the road is lined with Georgian buildings worthy of a European city-break destination.
If you're looking for a Grey Street pub which matches the road's aesthetic, Fitzgerald's is a great shout. The staff are smartly turned out, while the decor keeps it classy without being over the top or snobby.
The beer hits the spot too, with Fitzgerald's earning a place in the Real Ale Guide for its rotating selection

Once the Adelphi, now Lady Greys, the pub opposite the Theatre Royal's stage door is perfect for a place to sit down and sip long into the early hours. The bar takes centre stage, with dark wood interiors, round tables and cushioned seats.
Old and new is mixed together at Lady Greys, with the pub's historic character kept alive, but sprinkled with modern touches.

If you're going to be the pub underneath the Tyne Bridge, you better be impressive.
Thankfully, The Bridge Tavern is. On the outside, it appears to be a traditional boozer. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but customers are given a surprise upon getting inside. The tasteful decor celebrates the building's purpose, with exposed brickwork, pipes and ducting.
