KENTUCKY

Bishop Brossart 24, Dayton 8 

Bishop Brossart jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Senior running back Sam Howard led the Mustangs’ offense with two rushing touchdowns and an 81-yard touchdown catch from junior quarterback Trevor Schadler, who also had a rushing touchdown. Howard's touchdown reception was the longest play from scrimmage in Bishop Brossart program history. Dayton’s lone touchdown of the night came on an 80-yard kickoff return from Jordan Marksberry.

Carroll County 14, Ludlow 12 - FINAL

Cooper 7, Dixie Heights 0 

In a defensive slugfest, Cooper prevailed with its first shutout victory since Nov. 2015. The Jaguars' defense forced five turnovers, including a pair of interceptions from senior defensive back Zach Armour. Fellow senior corner Anthony Witschey totaled a game-high eight tackles (two for a loss) and a pick. The game's only offense was provided by Drew Warth, who hauled in a second-quarter 69-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Xavier Smith. The Dixie Heights defense surrendered under 200 yards and forced three turnovers. Senior wideout Dylan Spears led the struggling Colonels' offense with a game-high six catches for 94 yards.

Newport 19, Harrison County 14 

Newport is 1-0 for a third consecutive year after holding off Harrison County on the road to begin its 2019 campaign. The Wildcats were led by senior quarterback Kaleal Davis, who ran for a pair of touchdowns and found junior wide receiver Simon Keating for a third. Despite yielding a 93-yard touchdown pass late in the game, Newport’s defense allowed only 238 total yards and held Harrison County to just 1-for-11 on third-down conversions.

Holy Cross 30, Bellevue 12

Holy Cross secured a home win in their season opener largely in part due to a strong second half. Quarterback Hayden Spencer went 10 of 21 for 188 yards and two touchdowns — both touchdown throws went to Brandon McClendon who caught six passes for 148 yards. The Indians held Bellevue to just 125 yards of total offense and limited the Tigers to nine rushing yards. Bellevue scored on pick sixes by Aaron Atkins and Colton Hissong.

Simon Kenton piled up over 300 total rushing yards as they took care of business on the road in the Bumblebee-Mingua Beef Jerky Showdown. Erik Brown ran for 193 yards and a touchdown on 29 attempts and Chase Crone added 101 yards and a pair of scores. Brown and Crone each tallied touchdown tosses as Simon Kenton pulled away with 21 straight second-half points.
