Potato chip truck crashes, burns completely in South Asheville

A tractor-trailer shuttling potato chips crashed and burned the night of June 17 in South Asheville, shutting down sections of Interstate 26.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers responded to the crash at 9:43 p.m. According to the Hghway Patrol, the driver was exceeding safe speeds in the rain when he lost control of the vehicle. The tractor-trailer then smashed into the bridge rail on I-26 and jackknifed across the road.

The truck burned completely, but the driver was able to escape through a window. No injuries were reported.

Troopers closed the eastbound lanes of I-26 after the accident. They were reopened three hours later.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was charged with exceeding safe speed.
