The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has purchased 55 new vehciles including 6 mechanical road sweepers, 17 tractors with water tankers, 26 CNG powered trucks and two super sucker machines on Tuesday in order to control dust pollution in the city.
The vehicles were flagged off by the secretary of Housing and Urban Affairs, Durga Shankar Mishra, along with Tarun Kapoor, vice-chairman of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) from SDMC headquarters.
Mishra informed that Rs. 12.6 crore was released by his Ministry under Swachh Bharat Mission for purchasing the vehicles.
“The Swachchhta Abhiyaan has become a people’s movement thanks to the efforts of urban local bodies. In the last five years, the SDMC’s ranking improved from 185 to 27 this year. Similarly, the civic body should strive hard to improve Swachchhta Abhiyan ranking and be in the top 10 swachch cities of India,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, SDMC Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti said the corporation was trying to provide the best civic services to its citizens by taking new initiatives and reforms under the guidance of the Urban Development Ministry.

The SDMC has purchased the super sucker machine at a cost of Rs. 4.90 crore. “The super sucker units have a main super sucker machine and two dump trucks and these will be deployed to clean the inaccessible location such as covered drains, piped drains culvers and other bottlenecks of the drainage system that are partially or fully silted remain unattended through conventional means because of safety and various other aspects,” Bharti said.
