Minimum wage workers in Hawaii can’t afford to rent the average two-bedroom apartment — not unless they work 111 hours per week.
A new study from the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that the average renter in Hawaii earns $16.68 but needs $36.82 to comfortably afford a two-bedroom rental in the Aloha State.
The situation is even bleaker in urban Honolulu, where a full-time worker needs $39.75 per hour to afford a two-bedroom unit or $30.06 per hour for a one-bedroom in the city.
Hawaii’s minimum wage is $10.10 per hour. Despite pressure from advocates to raise the wage this year, a bill to do so didn’t make it out of Hawaii’s Democrat-dominated Legislature this year.
