Stormont Vail Health announced John Ma will rejoin its team and practice as a radiation oncologist. From 2015 to 2017, Ma provided radiation oncology services. He earned a doctorate in biochemistry and biophysics while he received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi in Jackson, Miss. He completed a clinical fellowship with the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Mississippi. He also completed a clinical internship with the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Back at the University of Mississippi, he completed his residency with the Department of Radiation Oncology, serving as chief resident from 2014-2015.

The Greater Topeka Partnership has welcomed Harvard graduate student Rodrigo Dorador to the Topeka and Shawnee County community. Dorador is a graduate student at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He will spend the summer in the community to work on building out the communication strategy for Momentum 2022. He will have a specific focus on methods for communicating the Momentum 2022 strategy and its progress to the community in a relatable manner.

Bonnie Rush has been selected as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. Rush will lead the college on fronts including program development, faculty and student development, research, teaching and extension, program accreditation, diversity and the 2025 plans for both the college and university. A professor of internal equine medicine, Rush's area of clinical expertise is equine respiratory disease with an emphasis on respiratory physiology, immunology and aerosol drug therapy. Rush began her career as a faculty member at Kansas State University in 1993 and served as head of the clinical sciences department from 2006 to mid-2017. She has been a core course coordinator and led curriculum reform and maintained responsibility for clinical outcome assessment. She has authored or co-authored more than 20 manuscripts in the Journal of Veterinary Education on effective instructional practices, communication training and student welfare. Rush earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ohio State University in 1989, completed internship training at North Carolina State University in 1990 and equine internal medicine residency training at Ohio State University in 1993.

Gary Clark, senior associate dean of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University, has been appointed interim dean of the college. Clark joined Kansas State University in 1994 with teaching and research responsibilities. In 2005 he was named head of the biological and agricultural engineering department, and in 2009 he became the college's senior associate dean. Along with serving as the college's senior associate dean, he is a professor of biological and agricultural engineering and a registered professional engineer. His technical expertise is in the design and management of irrigation systems and in the administration/oversight of engineering degree programs and program assessment.

The Junior league of Topeka announced Glendon and Sara Wilhelm as the Community Volunteer Award recipients for 2019. The Community Volunteer Award is awarded annually to outstanding volunteers. Award winners are given a donation to their charity of choice on behalf of the Junior League of Topeka. The Wilhelms will be honored at the Junior League of Topeka Membership Meeting on June 19 at Topeka Country Club.

Military news

Cadet Ryan Scott Brunner, son of Col. Matthew and Lt. Col. Fran Oleen and Scott and Tanya Brunner, of Topeka, graduated May 25 from the U.S. Military Academy.

Brunner graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 2014. While at West Point, he concentrated his studies in computer science with honors and served as the cadet in charge of the Cadet Competitive Cyber Team. He was awarded the Marshall Carter NSA Cyber Exercise and Iron Eagle Award, Best in Course Award for Electrical Engineering, and his team received second place overall for their project “Cyber Range as a Service and Environment.”

Brunner was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army within the cyber branch and will report to Fort Gordon, Ga., for his first assignment.

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Trey N. Flenniken graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland at San Antonio.

Flenniken is the son of Kristi Stanford, of Topeka, and grandson of Roger and Zanita Flenniken, also of Topeka. He is a 2018 graduate of Washburn Rural High School.
