Topeka police were investigating a shooting early Wednesday on the city's southwest side.

The incident was reported at 2:47 a.m. at a single-story residence in the 3200 block of S.W. 31st Terrace.

Police at the scene said a man was found suffering from a wound to the head at that address.

The man was talking with first-responders, police said. The man was transported by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital, where he was being treated as of 3:30 a.m.

Police spokeswoman Gretchen Koenen said the person who was shot wasn't cooperating with officers who were investigating the incident. Koenen added that preliminary information "leads us to believe the shooting may have been accidental."

At least five police cars remained at the scene as of 4 a.m., along with an AMR ambulance supervisor's car. Another AMR ambulance was seen coming west on S.W. 31st Terrace toward the scene shortly after 4 a.m.

The address where the shooting occurred was about a half-block west of S.W. Oakley on S.W. 31st Terrace.
