After a tough week last week, Topeka High girls soccer coach Derek Snook was looking for a bounce-back performance against Hayden on Tuesday night.

Snook got what he was looking for in the form of a 3-1 Centennial League win over the Wildcats at Hummer Sports Park.

"We were in a little bit of a slump,'' Snook said. "Last week, we went to Manhattan and got caught up and spun out and we had a 2-1 lead with five minutes to go and ended up losing the game, 3-2. Then against Free State (in a tie) we were just lethargic and slow moving the ball, slow countering. It was just slow.

"Tonight started out slow, but I think maybe we found our pace a little bit and maybe tried to find a few more passes and worked together.''

Sophomore Lexi Cabrera got the Trojans (6-4-1) on the board with 7:55 left in the first half, with that goal holding up for a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Sophomore Laryn Murray made it 2-0 with 21:01 remaining on a long free kick before Hayden (7-2-1) cut its deficit to one goal with 17:03 remaining on a goal from junior Haley Karolevitz.

Hayden was still very much in the game at that point, but Topeka High senior Lauren Dietrick, who also had an assist, clinched the win for the Trojans with a goal at the 4:40 mark.

"Hayden is always tough and they've got some good young players and it was a really good win for us,'' Snook said.

Tuesday's loss was the Wildcats' first since the second game of the year to Washburn Rural, but Hayden coach Klaus Kreutzer was pleased with his team's effort.

"I thought we made some mistakes, but I was really proud of the team. I thought we played well,'' Kreutzer said. "I think we gave a good accounting of ourselves, nothing to hang your head about.

"I like our progress and we had four or five freshmen playing at a time and I thought they did well.''
