Coronavirus in Mississippi: 17 new deaths, 418 cases reported Friday

Mississippi topped 700 deaths from the coronavirus Friday with 17 new deaths and 418 additional cases announced Friday. According to the Mississippi Department of Health, the state has seen 14,710 confirmed cases and 710 deaths.

Also on Friday, the Health Department reported 130 outbreaks and 1,839 total cases in long-term care facilities in the state with 358 deaths. More than half of all deaths from the virus stem back to nursing homes. 

Lauderdale County continuously has the highest number of active outbreaks in nursing homes. The department reported 190 cases and 38 deaths Friday. The county — with a population of just over 74,000 residents — also has the highest death toll in the state, with 59 reported deaths from COVID-19.

Hinds County, with the largest population in the state, has the highest number of cases of COVID-19 with 971 confirmed cases. Madison County has seen a recent surge of cases and now has the third-highest number in the state, with 709 confirmed cases.  

Issaquena remains the only Mississippi county without confirmed cases.

An estimated 9,401 people are presumed recovered from COVID-19, the Health Department said. A person is presumed recovered if it's been 14 days since he or she tested positive and was not hospitalized or 21 days if hospitalization was involved. The estimated number of recoveries is updated weekly.

Mississippi reported its first confirmed case of coronavirus March 11. One week later, with 50 confirmed cases, the state reported its first coronavirus death on March 19.
