Amazon is apparently prepping for another facility to be constructed in Mississippi, this time in Madison County.

The global retail giant purchased 69.02 acres of land in an area zoned for industrial use on Monday, officials said.

The development marks the fourth investment by the company in Mississippi in just over two years.

Workers take down a banner Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, after a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Amazon fulfillment center in Memphis. Amazon is extending its reach with its purchase of land in Madison County this week.

Joseph Deason, the executive director of the Madison County Development Economic Authority, confirmed the land purchase Thursday morning.

Additional details such as what Amazon intends to do with the land are unavailable, Deason said, since officials are currently under a nondisclosure agreement with the company.

Amazon Spokesman Owen Torres also confirmed the land purchase in an email.

"This land purchase in Madison County, MS provides us with the flexibility to quickly respond to our future network needs. Stay tuned for more information," he said.

The purchase site is in 1,027 acres of undeveloped area zoned for industrial activity called the Madison County Mega Site. The site is off Nissan Parkway and Mississippi  22 about a mile to the west of Interstate 55.

The MCEDA, which owns 325 acres of the area and has options for the remaining acreage, has already begun developments of its own, including the construction of an access road and a partnership with Entergy to provide a powerful $60 million substation, said Deason.

The news of the land purchase comes after Amazon opened a second warehouse in Olive Branch in northwest Mississippi in November of 2019. The Associated Press reported at the time the Mississippi Development Authority said the facility will create 500 full-time jobs in DeSoto County.

About 11 months before the Olive Branch announcement, Amazon said a similar facility in Marshall County would create 850 jobs over three years in the area, according to the AP.

Ten days ago, The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Amazon was planning to open a 860,000-square-foot building in Horn Lake

Amazon currently has a distribution center and warehouse in Memphis that is close to Olive Branch and Horn Lake just across the Tennessee-Mississippi state line.

The location of the purchase area in Madison County would be ideal for distribution, Deason said. The site is next to Interstate 55 which extends north to Memphis and south to New Orleans and close to Interstate 20 which connects to Dallas and Atlanta.
