A shooting that led to another death of a Jackson man on Tuesday night is the city's 68th homicide of the year.

Jackson police are investigating the fatal shooting of Dontrez Stigger, 19, after he was shot multiple times while sitting in his vehicle in the 1100 block of Trinity Street. 

The shooting occurred just before 8:30 p.m.

Stigger was transported to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.

The city is looking at a record number of homicides for the year.

Stigger's death represents the 68th homicide since Jan. 1, according to the Jackson Police Department. It follows multiple shooting deaths, including two double homicides in the last two weeks.

In one case, a mother and daughter were shot and killed at a Jackson home. In the other, a man and woman were shot to death inside an extended stay hotel.

Jackson saw 82 homicides in 2019, nearly equaling the rate in 2018 which was the highest in more than two decades.

At the current pace, the city would see about 113 total homicides by the end of the year.
