Mason Park Community Center is one of four Akron community centers with extended hours July 18-20 as a heat wave hits Northeast Ohio.

AKRON, Ohio -- Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan has announced that city community centers will serve as “cooling centers” ahead of a heat wave that could bring the heat index into the low triple digits.

Four community centers will have extended hours, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Thursday through Saturday: Lawson Street Community Center in West Akron, Mason Park Community Center in Middlebury, Patterson Park Community Center in North Hill and Summit Lake Community Center.

“During this heat wave, families in need are invited to stop by and cool down in any of our community centers,” Horrigan said in a statement.

Akron also has three public pools: one indoor pool at the Balch Street Community Center in Highland Square, and outdoor pools at Reservoir Park in Goodyear Heights and Perkins Park in West Akron.

The mayor encouraged Akronites to check on their neighbors and family members, and to "take steps to keep children and pets well hydrated, rested and out of the sun.”
