AKRON, Ohio – The 82nd annual FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby is expected to be one of the “hottest” events of the year, with temperatures expected to be in the 90s.

More than 400 competitors, ages 7 to 20, have come from across the country, as well as Canada and Japan, to race in their gravity-powered cars on Saturday at Derby Downs for a chance to win part of $36,000 in college scholarships.

If you’re planning on going, here’s three things you need to know:

1. The first heat begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and V.I.P. heats are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Award Ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Akron Civic Theater.

2. It’s going to be hot.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning in effect Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. Heat index values – what it feels like based on temperature and humidity – could climb near 110 in some areas.

Layer up the sunscreen and grab a hat, sunglasses, umbrella or even a canopy, like some of the family members of competitors, derby spokesman Bob Troyer said.

“We encourage people to bring lots of water,” Troyer said, adding that coolers are allowed. There will also be food and beverage vendors.

Medics will be on-hand in case of emergency, Troyer said.

3. Admission is $5. Free parking is available in a gravel lot near Derby Downs, which is at 789 Derby Downs Drive.

Drivers need to enter from George Washington Boulevard to Springfield Lake Drive to Derby Downs Drive. There will be signs with arrows pointing you to the lot, according to the derby.
