MEDINA, Ohio -- Here is what Medina County students are up to at their colleges and universities.

Kent State University: Local collegians on the Dean’s and President’s lists for the summer semester at Kent State include Hinckley resident, Jillian Sammon; Brunswick residents, Salamakha Bogdan and Taylor Stewart; and Medina residents Keilah Dyer, Krista Merhar, Kaylyn Minute, Lindsay Posatiere, Samantha Rohrbaugh and Kelsey Tucker.

Local residents who graduated this summer from KSU include: Abi Kulig of Brunswick, BS in Nursing; Kelsie Schultz of Medina Associate of Arts; Tammy Hoegler of Medina, Master of Education; Emily Weyls of Valley City, Associate of Arts and BA in business administration; Krista Merhar of Medina, BS in Nursing; Katherine Wolfe of Brunswick Associate of Arts; Jason Tepes of Hinckley, BA; Elizabeth Krause of Medina, (distinction) BA; Samantha Rohrbaugh of Medina, BA; Chaslyn Costello of Medina, BA; Nicholas Ferritto of Valley City BA in Business Administration; Candace Taber of Brunswick (summa cum laude) BS in public health; Marina Budi of Medina, BA.

Ashland University: Megan Pollock of Medina is a member of Ashland University's Women's Golf team. Pollock is majoring in educational technology and is a graduate of Medina High School.

Kutztown University: Kutztown University of Pennsylvania will have 16 student-athletes representing its men's and women's tennis teams for the 2019-2020 season, including Benjamin Kelly of Medina.

Phi Kappa Phi: Jessica Yonkers of Brunswick was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Yonkers was initiated at The University of Findlay. Yonkers is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.

Ohio Wesleyan University: Audrey Calvin of Medina and Avery Finding of Hinckley are among nearly 80 first-year students invited to join Ohio Wesleyan University's selective Leland F. and Helen Schubert Honors Program this fall.

To be invited to join the Honors Program, the incoming students were required to have a 3.5 high school GPA, a 28 ACT, or a 1300 SAT when admitted to the university.

Ohio Wesleyan's four-year Honors Program culminates with each student conducting a substantial, independently conceived and executed research or creative project supervised by a research mentor. All projects include a written thesis or other appropriate reflective or creative piece, which is used by an examining committee to assess the quality, rigor, and appropriateness of each project. Students who complete the program successfully earn the diploma designation of "Graduation with Honors."

Belmont University: John Horst, a Medina native and Sadie Nayman of Hinckley, joined 2,000 other new Belmont University freshman and transfer students during Towering Traditions orientation this year for SERVE, an opportunity to complete community service together throughout the greater Nashville area. The incoming class this semester is the University's largest class yet. The school kicked off its fall 2019 semester with a record-breaking enrollment number as the University welcomed 8,481 students to campus

Many of the local metro schools, Nashville General Hospital at Meharry, Legacy Mission Village and nearly 50 other local organizations received aid from Belmont students during the annual Welcome Week program.

Each year, new students at Belmont University are provided with the opportunity to volunteer their time and dive into the special community of Nashville with more than 200 upperclassmen student leaders accompanying them. Students spent the day helping with tasks such as organizing hospital supplies, applying fresh paint to buildings and picking up trash in multiple areas.

University of Mount Union: The City of Alliance and University of Mount Union's Ralph and Mary Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement partnered for a "Super Service Saturday" event to paint fire hydrants across the city on Sept. 14.

Adam Nagy and Jacob Prestage of Hinckley were among the more than 30 students to volunteered throughout the day.

University of Findlay: The University of Findlay recently welcomed new undergraduate and graduate students to campus for fall 2019 including:

Medina residents; Paige Horton, a Medina High School graduate, who is pursuing a degree in diagnostic medical sonography; Melanie Kerns, who is pursuing a master's degree in environmental, safety, and health management; Ralph King, a Medina High School graduate who is pursuing a degree in strength and conditioning; Timothy Thompson, who is pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree and MHS graduate Madison Vedda, who is pursuing a degree in psychology.

Brunswick High School graduate Catherine Blackley, is pursuing a degree in forensic chemistry. Samuel Oliver, of Valley City is pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree.

Canisius College: Erika Eyssen of Brunswick is among more than 660 new students to attend Canisius College for the 2019-20 academic year. The incoming class is comprised of 560 first-year students and 100 transfer students who, combined, represent 224 high schools from 25 states and five countries.
