FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- Albeit minor in the grand scheme of things, COVID-19 has resulted in plenty of forgettable stay-at-home haircuts. For many folks, the first thing they may do when businesses reopen at the end of the week is put on a hat and visit their regular barbershops and hair salons.

In Fairview Park, customers frequenting the popular Stefanec Barbershop -- located at 19227 Lorain Road -- will return to find a completely renovated space.

“We moved into this location going on 14 years (ago),” said co-owner Julia Stefanec, who owns the second-generation business with her brother, David. “Since our business has been expanding, we needed to figure out a way to add more barber chairs to our space so we can have more help.

“It just so happened our renter moved out next door in the same building. We took that time to build (Bombshell) salon next door. It turned out so nice that when we would come back to our space, it felt like it was time for an upgrade.”

Initially, the siblings were thinking about completing the do-it-themselves project on the weekends; however, COVID-19 provided the perfect opportunity to finish the roughly $20,000 renovation.

The floor plan of the 800-square-foot shop has been completely reworked, with walls removed and two new barber chairs added, bringing the number to half a dozen. The current plan is to have the same number of barbers in the next year or so.

“We’re a full-service barbershop -- clipper cuts, Marine-style razor cuts, all fades, hot towel shaves and beard trims -- that gets pretty crowded on the weekends,” Stefanec said. “Even though our customers normally don’t have a long wait, we’ll be ensuring a quicker turnover.”

After calling Fairview Park home for more than a decade, Stefanec said they love the location and the city, which is why the renovation made sense.

“It was not only to breathe new life into the barbershop, but also because our customers are so awesome,” Stefanec said.

“They take care of us so well, so it’s nice to give them a little something extra -- sprucing up the place and making it a little bit more modern with a little bit of a different look. We’re excited to see their reactions.”
