MEDINA, Ohio -- Shoppers at Medina’s Farmers Market on Public Square had the opportunity Saturday (July 25) to experience a tropical Christmas in July, complete with decorated trees, sidewalk sales and a selfie station photo contest.

The weeklong event will continue through Aug. 1, with festive trees in front of Nibble, The Raspberry and The Rose, All Fired Up! and the JK Gift Shop -- all in the 200 block of South Court Street -- as well as in front of the Visitors Center at 32 Public Square and the United Church of Christ at 217 E. Liberty St.

Guests who take a selfie with one of the trees and tag #mainstreetmedina will be entered into a drawing to win “Main Street Medina Bucks,” good at member businesses.

On Saturday, the gazebo in the center of the square featured a tree decorated with red ribbons, and Rockin’ Rick, a guitarist, who entertained shoppers with his singing and playing. Rockin’ Rick is a frequent sight uptown, often busking in front of the old A.I. Root building on the western side of the square.

Santa and a tropical Christmas in July tree

Saturday’s bright sunshine and high temperatures were more apropos for the event’s tropical theme than for traditional Christmas ornaments. Artificial evergreen trees were bedecked with sunglasses, inflated beach toys, leis, flip flops, sand buckets and fish decorations.

Santa -- without his boots but wearing sunglasses and a lei -- stood beside the tree at All Fired Up! A tall flamingo accompanied the tree at Nibble, while a bright sun replaced the traditional star or angel tree topper.

The farmers market was in full summer mode, with fresh sweet corn, squash, lettuce, radishes, beets, tomatoes and green beans, as well as homebaked goodies, jellies, cheese, and popcorn. Colorful summer flowers were available at more than one vendor.

Shoppers were following Gov. Mike DeWine’s latest coronavirus pandemic directive by wearing face masks and attempting to keep a safe social distance from others.
