LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Campbell’s Sweets Factory announced today that it will soon close its Lakewood shop located at 14730 Detroit Ave.

The closure was announced on Facebook with a statement about the business’ recent development.

“We are proud to offer a much more unique, memorable customer experience, enriched with tours, corporate events, and parties out of our West 25th Street store,” the post reads. “As a result, we have decided to consolidate our locations, and will be closing the Lakewood outpost as of August 3, 2019.”

The popular sweets shop sells caramel corn, baked goods and candy. It opened its first location in Ohio City in 2011, and later opened several more stores.

The Lakewood location is the only shop slated to close. Campbell’s will keep its Ohio City location, West Side Market shop and downtown arcade shops open.

Owner Jeff Campbell said that the Lakewood location has been a weak link for years. It took a particular hit when Lakewood Hospital closed in 2016.

“We literally lost 30% of our business,” he said. “We were getting so many people coming in and buying gifts for their patients, gifts for the doctors and nurses.”

Other closures like Burgers 2 Beer and a nearby insurance company continued to take away business from that Campbell’s, which relied primarily on foot traffic. Soon, the business wasn’t able to keep up with rent, Campbell said.

“The rest of the company carries that store. We can’t continue to do that," Campbell said. “It’s something we didn’t want to do, but our company is a healthy company, it’s a good company. When we opened up in Lakewood, the Ohio City store lost pretty much all of its Lakewood customers. We do have a hope they’re going to come back [in Ohio City]."

Before the Lakewood shop closes on Aug. 3, it will have a two-hour event at on July 26 with steep discounts on store products. The company also plans to host an open house party on July 20 at its Ohio City store, located at 2084 W. 25th St., Cleveland.
