Medina County needs strong supports for those who have disabilities

I am writing to make a plea for the community to vote for the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ operating levy renewal. My child attended the MCBDD for many years and I know how useful their services are to me, but I hope those who do not have a child or adult or relative with disabilities realize how needed the agency is by Medina County residents.

It is so important that children and adults with disabilities have a safe place to go. Years and years ago, these individuals had no place in society. They were often hidden away from the community, shut up in their homes. There was no access to trained staff to help them and their families had no one to turn to.

My child and others are able to learn confidence through services funded by the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Although not all individuals will live on their own, they are still given the tools to be confident in who they are.

The MCBDD staff focuses on the individual’s abilities, not their disability. This is so important for their self-confidence and success. Social skills and different ways of communicating go hand in hand.

Safety is a concern for many parents, and the MCBDD has also always provided my child with emotional support and helped her feel safe when she was away from home.

Thank you for allowing me to write my heart-felt feelings and for taking the time to read this letter. I ask that you vote YES for the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities Renewal Operating Levy.
