Medina County Arts Week features concerts, children’s activities July 14-21

MEDINA, Ohio -- The Medina County Arts Council will once again present numerous free concerts and arts-related activities for both children and adults during its annual Arts Week July 14-21.

Although most of the concerts and activities will take place at the gazebo in the Medina Square, there will also be events at the Medina, Brunswick, Lodi and Wadsworth libraries, in addition to a concert in the Sharon Circle gazebo, according to a news release from the Medina County Arts Council.

Wadsworth Library

The week kicks off with a performance by French horn player Kevin Walters at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at the Wadsworth Library, 132 Broad St. Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO), the Wadsworth Library and the arts council are all sponsoring the event. Admission is free, but tickets can be reserved at ormaco.org.

Medina Gazebo

There will be activities for both children and adults at the Medina Square gazebo at noon each day from July 15-19, according to the release, in addition to evening concerts July 15-18 starting at 7:30 p.m. Concert attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs to sit on.

At noon on Monday, June 15, Cloverleaf Schools art teacher Adam Michel will teach chalk-blending techniques. That evening, Akron-based Americana and blues duo Grady Miller will perform. Cathy and Michael Grady are both instructors at Woodsy’s in Medina.

At noon on Tuesday, June 16, performer/songwriter Nick Elkevizth -- who plays violin, lap steel guitar and mandolin -- will perform folk songs. The evening concert on the square will feature local folk/rock artist John Husbands.

Kelly Parks of the Medina Centre for Dance Art will conduct an interactive dance workshop at noon on Wednesday, June 17. Acoustic folk performer Jim Gill will play later that evening.

About a dozen students of vocal coach Kimberly States of VS Vocal Studio will perform at noon on Thursday, July 18, and duo Parsons & Polk will play classic hits of the ‘70s at the gazebo at 7:30 p.m.

Students of Woodsy’s instructor Melinda Kline will perform piano and vocal selections at noon on Friday, July 19. That evening, the Medina Community Band will hold its weekly summer concert starting at 8:30 p.m.

Art in the Park, sponsored by the Medina County Art League, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21, on the Medina Square. The annual art show features dozens of vendors selling handmade pieces.

Medina Library

The Medina County District Library will be hosting a hip-hop workshop Tuesday, July 16, through Thursday, July 18, for grades 3-5 at 3 p.m. each day at the Medina branch, 210 S. Broadway St. Krista Juderjahn from Ignite Dance Studio will teach street dance styles.

The second annual Writers Conference will be held at the Medina Library from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20. The event includes a full day of workshops, a critique partner meet and greet, and a book giveaway, according to the Medina County District Library’s website. Lunch will be provided. Participants can register at mcdl.info.

Brunswick Library

Attendees of all ages can hear and learn more about the Australian instrument didgeridoo and traditional storytelling during the Didgeridoo Down Under performance at 10 a.m. Friday, July 19, a the Brunswick Library, 3649 Center Road, Brunswick. The show is a unique fusion of music, culture, science, comedy, character building, anti-bullying, environmentalism and audience participation, according to an arts council release.

Lodi Library

Celtic Eagles Pipe Band’s drum major and bagpiper will perform Scottish tunes at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Lodi Library, 635 Wooster St. Attendees should register at mcdl.info.

Sharon Circle Gazebo

Roland Pizano and his five-piece band will perform Latin and Caribbean music at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Sharon Circle Gazebo. Children are invited to make their own percussion instruments during the performance.
