Akron man takes gun from home invaders, chases them off

AKRON, Ohio — A man managed to fight off three home invaders, police say, eventually taking a gun from one of them and chasing them out of the residence.

The 31-year-old victim did suffer a cut to the top of his head during the incident Tuesday afternoon on the 300 block of Storer Avenue in the West Akron neighborhood.

The man tells police that three men entered his home, assaulted him and took some items, including a cell phone and AirPods.

One of the suspects then pointed a gun at the man and demanded he open a safe that was in the home. Another suspect also was carrying a sledgehammer, police say.

While near the safe, the victim began to wrestle with the suspect with the gun, police say. He was struck in the head during the fight by an unknown object.

Two of the suspects ran from the home as the victim took the gun from the remaining suspect, police say. The victim then fired a shot at the suspect inside the house but the man escaped out of the back door, police say.

Police investigating the incident recovered the victim’s cell phone, a sledgehammer and a handgun.

The victim was treated at Cleveland Clinic Akron General for the cut to his head.
