HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating a shooting at Houston Sportsplex that left a 32-year-old man dead Thursday. The man who fired the shots said it was self-defense, officers said.
Shepherd Schumaker, 32, of Highlands, died at a local hospital.
“I rushed to the hospital to try to see my brother but by the time I got there we had got the news,” said Brandon Fitzcharles, Schumaker’s friend.
Investigators said the shooting happened at 12631 South Main Street. at around 10:40 p.m. when a large fight broke out in the parking lot over a softball game.
Police said after the game, Schumaker pulled out a gun and pointed it at several people, including a 45-year-old suspect who was trying to break up the fight. Police said the suspect then pulled his own weapon and shot Schumaker.
Officers said Schumaker was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
“He cared truly about each individual. His smile filled a room with love. We will forever miss him and love him,” a statement from the Schumaker family said.
According to investigators, the shooter remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. The suspect told police he shot Schumaker in self-defense as he feared for his life.
Officers said there were about 300 people at the scene during the time of the shooting. Investigators are looking for anyone who may have the fight and shooting on camera.
The Houston Police Department has referred the case to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, without charges. A Harris County grand jury will review the facts and making a charging decision.
The publicly unidentified shooter was released from custody Friday.
“I just hope justice is served,” Fitzcharles said.
