CLYDEBANK'S MP is backing women from across West Dunbartonshire who are pressing for the UK Government to rethink state pension changes.

Martin Docherty-Hughes attended a march of hundreds of people in Glasgow at the weekend as part of the WASPI campaign (Women Against State Pension Inequality).

The fight was prompted because millions of 1950s-born women had their pension qualifying age changed by up to six years. Some face being up to £48,000 out of pocket because of the lack of transitional arrangements.

Mr Docherty-Hughes told the Post: “It’s a privilege to stand side-by-side with West Dunbartonshire's WASPI campaigners who are working tirelessly to end the injustice for 1950s-born women facing state pension inequality.

“More than 350,000 women in West Dunbartonshire and across Scotland are being robbed of their pensions by the government – pensions they worked hard for all of their lives.

“The huge turnout at the weekend’s rally demonstrates the strength of the campaign. If the Tories think the WASPI campaign is going away anytime soon they can think again. We’re not giving up.

“These women are simply asking the government to pay out what they have paid in. It’s time for the Tories to do the right thing and bring forward a fair deal that pays the pensions my constituents deserve.”
