We’re gonna need a bigger boat! College lacrosse may have started a couple weeks ago, but this is definitely Opening Day for Division I men’s lacrosse, as thirty games are on the schedule today. There would’ve been 31 games but Lehigh & Virginia played last night instead of today as originally scheduled. Despite the loss of a tasty match-up, we still have a great line-up of games today. So grab all your extra Valentine’s Day candy and get comfy, as today is going to be a full day of #LaxRedZone.

Okay, the one that’s numbered 100. But even if we don’t have the pomp and circumstance, we have you all set for Week 2 of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse season!

I’m joined by Safe, Chris, and Jake as we look forward to a weekend with some big time matchups like Loyola-Hopkins and Denver-Duke, plus others with intrigue like Ohio State-UMass, Army-Rutgers, and Albany-Syracuse. College Crosse Week 2 Picks

This weekend’s slate of D1 mens’ lacrosse games is quietly one of the best of the year. Most associate the biggest rivalries in the sport with late April, but you can also count on mid-February for an absolutely stellar slate of out-of-conference matchups.

The highlight of the weekend is probably Denver vs. Duke, as the Blue Devils try to shake off the rust from their shocking loss to High Point and grab a signature win from Bill Tierney’s Pios. Duke won this matchup last year, but Denver had won the previous four.

And there’s a lot more where that came from. The Loyola Greyhounds make the five-minute drive down Charles Street to Homewood Field to faceoff with the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays for a heated Baltimore rivalry. The Jays are looking to rebound in a big way in their home opener after last week’s beatdown at Towson. Loyola won this one at Ridley last year, but the last time it was at Homewood, Joel Tinney did this.

The Syracuse Orange look to avenge last week’s upset loss to Colgate with their annual matchup with the Albany Great Danes Saturday afternoon in the Carrier Dome. Opening faceoff is set for 4 PM on ACC Network Extra (Live Stats are here). The Orange lead the all-time series 15-2. Both of their losses have come this decade.

But the Big Story...

Sophomore midfielder Tucker Dordevic is officially done for the season, Orange head coach John Desko said on Wednesday. Dordevic will redshirt and rehab in time for next season. As a freshman a year ago, the Oregon native started all 15 games and put up 15 goals and five assists for the Orange. David Lipka assumed his spot in the starting lineup last week.

Dordevic suffered the foot injury back in the fall. After missing spring scrimmages, he was cleared to practice prior to the Colgate game, but re-aggravated the injury last week. Desko mentioned last week it could be a serious injury, but it was certain from inside the program that Dordevic wouldn’t play this season.

Former coach Don Zimmerman is really excited for his induction into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame.

Don Zimmerman spent 23 years manning the sideline for the UMBC men’s lacrosse team, and he led the Retrievers to the NCAA Tournament on six different occasions and was named the America East Coach of the Year three times. As a result of his success with the Retrievers, Zimmerman will be inducted into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame April 5. Head men’s soccer coach Pete Caringi Jr., former soccer player Marcus Gross and Drew Westervelt, one of Zimmerman’s former players, will also be inducted.

Coach Kevin Conry appeared on the Michigan Insider on 1050 AM WTKA to talk Wolverines lacrosse.

Pat Spencer is focused on team goals and not individual honors.

Log on to YouTube and you can find a slew of highlight-reel goals by Loyola men’s lacrosse senior attackman Pat Spencer. There’s the behind-the-back shot against Towson. The spinning, underhanded goal against Virginia. And the time he ran through five defenders for a close-range score against Bucknell. For the last three seasons, Spencer has tormented opposing defenses. Now, he enters his senior year as the Warrior/U.S. Lacrosse Division I Men’s Preseason Player of the Year. He is undaunted by the lofty expectations.

Good God Johns Hopkins.

Obviously I’m delayed in my article because of my utter shock that the preseason #1 ranked B1G team, and preseason #7 nationally, Johns Hopkins, lost 8-17 to Towson for their opening game. Towson wasn’t even ranked in the preseason, and this win for them actually bumped them up to take Johns Hopkins place at #7. If you see a Blue Jay, yell “SHAME” at it.

Lacrosse gaining popularity across borderland.

They wear helmets, gloves and shoulder and arm pads – and carry big sticks. No, it’s not hockey but lacrosse, where players use the net at the head of the stick to carry, pass and shoot the ball into the goal. The sport – believed to have its origins with Native Americans in the 1600s – is slowly making its way to El Paso and gaining popularity among young athletes.
