This will be the first meeting between the two schools since last year’s Final Four game.

As the 2019 regular season begins to wind down, the No. 4 Yale men’s lacrosse team will travel to face a team it downed twice last year — once in the regular season and again in the Final Four — in a game that means just a little bit more for star transfer TD Ierlan ’20.

The Bulldogs (8–2, 4–1 Ivy) head to upstate New York Friday to go toe-to-toe with Albany (5–6, 4–1 America East) in their second-to-last tilt of the 2019 regular season. The Great Danes’ home advantage will be particularly stark — their dedicated fan base often fills the 4,000-seat stadium. This year’s meeting between the Elis and Albany will be especially significant for Ierlan, who will be opposing his former teammates.

Yale’s lacrosse coaches wanted to provide their goalies with additional training a couple of years ago, but they faced several obstacles. One was a good problem to have: their defensemen were so skilled that few shots reached their own net. The other was unavoidable. Lacrosse balls are hard, and Division I players can often shoot them at 80 to 90 miles per hour.

“You have this paradox where it’s definitely a volume-based activity and repetition because it’s technique but, at the same time, that same technique beats you up,” said Thomas Newman, Yale’s director of sports performance and innovation.

High school lacrosse coach Juan Gaytan and his players were devastated after team captain Nate Cowsert, 18, took his own life on a Sunday evening in January 2018.

Six months later, their heartbreak doubled when another popular teammate, Jeremy Shipp, also killed himself. He was 16.

Gaytan and his team of 30 players at Box Elder High School in the rural northern Utah community of Brigham City were overwhelmed with grief and scared that there could be more tragedy. They knew it was not uncommon for suicides to cluster, for one person’s suicide to prompt another. Gaytan couldn’t let another tragedy happen on his team.

Before the start of the season in February, coach Hannah Nielsen set up a board with challenging but attainable goals for her team.

Finish over .500. The Michigan women’s lacrosse team, in its five years of existence, had never had a winning season.

A winning record in Big Ten play. The Wolverines had never done that either — or even won more than two games.

Make the Big Ten Tournament. The last time that happened was 2016, back before there were just four teams in the tournament. Michigan was winless in conference that year and exited unceremoniously with a 20-5 loss to Northwestern. Its presence was not missed.

Things are looking up for Georgetown after they beat Villanova last weekend.

The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team changed their season’s tone with an impressive 16-13 victory over the Villanova Wildcats last Saturday. With the home victory, the Hoyas returned to the top 20 rankings, moving to 18, increasing their chances at a postseason bid to the Big East tournament.

Not only was this victory crucial for Georgetown (9-4, 2-2 Big East) in establishing its postseason chances, but the team showed remarkable improvements in their playing style that was impeding the team from beating top-ranked competitors, as the defensive aggressiveness led to more turnovers, with nearly the entire roster showing improved decision-making.

If you’re going to have a massive Philly Easter egg hunt, you might as well get a helicopter to drop thousands of eggs.

A privately owned helicopter will dump thousands of Easter eggs from the sky on Saturday during what could be the most Northeast Philly event ever. The epic egg drop of 2019 will go down at 1:45 p.m. at the River Fields at 7801 State Road, according to the Northeast Times, which first reported the event. It’s being organized by Tacony’s CityReach Church and the office of indicted Sixth District Council member Bobby Henon.

Happy Good Friday!

The week leading up to Easter is called Holy Week. It begins with Palm Sunday and ends on Holy Saturday, but each day in between comes with its own name and celebrations Good Friday falls on April 19 this year and is marked by many different traditions around the world.

Rest in peace: Jerrie Cobb, pioneering aviator and subject of now-running Old Globe play, has died at 88.

A top-flight pilot whose dashed dreams of reaching space are now being dramatized on the Old Globe Theatre’s stage has died at age 88.

Jerrie Cobb, the central subject of the Globe play “They Promised Her the Moon,” died March 18 in Florida, her family said.

Cobb, who began flying at age 12, had set several aviation records and received numerous honors when she was recruited in 1960 to be part of the “Mercury 13,” the informal name for a privately funded testing/training program meant to advance the idea of sending women into space. (The name was a play on the official Mercury 7 program that eventually made Alan Shepard the first American in space.)
