Welcome to the penultimate weekend of the 2019 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse season. Sure, there isn’t exactly a landslide of marquee matchups to talk about, but the ones that fit the bill are going to prove to be some of the most important of the season. NCAA Tournament lives are on the line, and we’ll get you set for the weekend to come on this edition of COLLEGE CROSSECAST.

I’m joined by Safe and Jake as we look ahead to the holiday weekend of games. First we look back at the brief set of mid-week games (:32) before diving into Friday and the early Saturday slate (1:15, includes UNC-Notre Dame and Towson-Delaware), then the mid-afternoon (19:51, includes Maryland-Ohio State and Loyola-Army), and the rest of Saturday and a critical Easter Sunday matchup for Johns Hopkins against Penn State (31:30). We wrap up with some pick ‘em (41:30) and the College Crossecast Mailbag (51:48), which you can contribute by tweeting at @College_Crosse with your questions or ideas for us to discuss.

Welcome to Week 11 of the 2019 college lacrosse season. We’re only a couple weeks away from Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament. And with the clock ticking, it’s desperation time for some teams to beef up their resumes or conference records before conference tournaments begin. One conference concludes their regular season play this weekend, while others have a couple more weeks to go before their end of season tourney. As always, make sure you get yourselves ready for the weekend or the season (if you’re team starts this weekend) with a bevy of College Crosse content.

Yale men’s lacrosse’s Ierlan wins in return to UAlbany.

His former teammates had his current ones tightly defended, so Yale junior TD Ierlan took the only option he had late in the second quarter of Friday’s men’s lacrosse game at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.

So Ierlan — who stunned the college lacrosse world last offseason when he transferred from the University at Albany to Yale — charged toward the goal and his shot’s aim was true.

And?

“This is going to sound terrible,” Ierlan said after Yale’s 10-5 non-conference win against UAlbany, “but it was almost like I wasn’t happy to score a goal.”

431 out of 503 games down with only 72 regular season games to go. We’ve completed 85.7% of the regular season, and the postseason tournaments begin next weekend with the ACC Tournament. In a little over two weeks, we’ll have May Mayhem in college lacrosse. And with every conference having their teams play a couple of conference games so far and some more people releasing their Bracketology projections, it’s once again time to keep dissecting what we might see when the 17-team field is announced in May.

Mercurio is a cancer survivor, blind in one eye, with a DI scholarship for lacrosse.

He survived a bout with cancer as a young child, which left him legally blind in one eye, but AJ Mercurio has persevered, all the way to earning a Division I college scholarship in lacrosse. Of course, it helps that he is an athletic 6-foot-3, 215-pounder, and has been playing lacrosse since he was young. “For anyone that has seen him play, they would not believe that he is doing the things he does with only one functional eye,” his father, Chris Mercurio, said. “He doesn’t know any different. He never let it be a handicap. That’s how he lived his life.” Mercurio, a senior at Damonte Ranch, has signed to play lacrosse for Denver in the fall. There, he will join Galena graduate TJ Wright, who is a sophomore, making Mercurio just the second DI college lacrosse player from Northern Nevada.

College lacrosse’s early recruiting ban will be unaffected by the NCAA’s new recruiting proposal.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse were removed from a proposal that the NCAA Division I Council passed during their meeting Thursday and Friday in Indianapolis. For most sports, the new rule will permit contact from or to a coach June 15 of a high school student’s sophomore year and will allow prospective student-athlete visits to start Aug. 1.

While for some sports the contact and visit rules set new dates that are later than they have been making contact, the June and August dates would have pushed forward the recruiting timeline for lacrosse. The ACC submitted Proposal 2018-93-2 to the council to exempt lacrosse and keep Sept. 1 as the initial date of any contact. The Sept. 1 date was only adopted two years ago for lacrosse by the DI Council.

Syracuse lacrosse defense forges identity.

Most of the time when Drake Porter is on a lacrosse field, he’s playing goalie for Syracuse University.

But there are also moments when he allows himself to just be a fan. That switchover usually comes when one of his defensive teammates makes the type of play that can leave Porter in awe.

Porter easily runs through the highlight reel.

”There’s sort of one thing each defender does every game where I’m like, ‘Wow.’ (Peter) Dearth will knock a guy over completely. He’s a beast. Brett Kennedy will strip a guy, take it to the other end and start transition. And he does it with so much ease,’’ Porter said.

With ACC regular season play complete, the Syracuse Orange wrap up the regular season with a road trip to Annapolis to take on the Navy Midshipmen. Opening faceoff is set for 5 PM on CBS Sports Network with John Sadak and Evan Washburn on the call (Live Stats are here). Navy leads the all-time series 19-8-1, but Syracuse has won seven of the last nine meetings. This will be the first time since 1982 the two teams played each other in Annapolis in the regular season. The teams met for a fall ball scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium back in 2015. Side note, that stadium is the best for college lacrosse.

Marquette vs. Duke preview by Anonymous Eagle.

Look. I’ve gotten tired of talking about how badly Duke has completely owned Marquette men’s lacrosse over the past six years. Duke has a +65 goal differential in the series, and that is in just six games. It’s been bad for the Golden Eagles, and it’s not fun to try and pretend to talk about how Marquette might win this game. On top of that, this game is essentially meaningless for Marquette. Their at-large hopes for the NCAA tournament are completely out the door at this point, so even if they pull off the biggest regular season win in program history here, it’s not getting them into the field. All that matters is getting into the Big East tournament to try to get the automatic bid, and Duke is in the ACC.
