Memphis police respond to multiple vehicle crashes city-wide, several roads closed

Memphis police responded to multiple vehicle crashes on Wednesday night, including one that involved nine vehicles.

This story has been updated with new information from the Memphis Police Department on the number of vehicles involved in a crash at Austin Peay Highway and James Road on Interstate 40.

Memphis police responded to over 100 vehicle crashes across the city on Wednesday, a Memphis Police Department traffic update said. 

MPD described streets as "hazardous" as multiple Memphis roads were closed.

Officers said a vehicle struck an overpass on a bridge at 7:04 p.m. at Boyle Avenue and Airways Boulevard in South Memphis, according to the Memphis Police Department. The overpass was shut down.

Officers notified the Memphis Office of Emergency Management to inspect the bridge. 

Moments later, officers responded to multiple vehicles involved in an accident at Austin Peay Highway and James Road on Interstate 40. A total of 10 vehicles were involved.

No injuries were reported from either incident. Police said the bridge is iced over due to weather.

According to a traffic update from MPD, they have responded to 106 vehicle crashes since noon on Wednesday. 

Other road closures due to accidents

MPD said Sam Cooper Boulevard and Hollywood Street will remained closed until further notice, due to several vehicles involved in an accident. Officers said the overpass is completely iced over.

Two victims were transported in non-critical from the scene, according to MPD.

Airways Boulevard and the Interstate 240 exit ramp will also be shut down due to a critical accident with 6 vehicles involved, police said.

Officers said sand trucks are on the way to treat the affected roads.
