The Memphis Zoo said they will be reviewing their current weapon policy after a person carrying a gun accidentally shot himself in the parking lot Tuesday.

According to the zoo, a guest shot himself in the leg while entering the zoo Tuesday afternoon.

A Memphis police officer working detail for the area was able to immediately respond to the victim. Another officer responding to the incident rendered first aid to the victim, who was then taken to Regional One Health in non-critical condition. No one else was injured.

The zoo said they do allow weapons on the property, but gun owners must alert staff at the gate and present a gun permit before entering. The policy, the zoo said, is now under review.

Memphis police issued the victim a misdemeanor citation for unlawful possession of a weapon. The weapon was not found to be stolen.
