What happened

Initial social media posts from the Memphis Police Department indicated that the shooting had stemmed from an argument. At a press conference Saturday night, MPD homicide Lt. Anthony Mullins said there was “verbal exchange” between Cofield and the shooter as Cofield tried to enter his car, followed by a gunshot. However, Mullins said the motive in the shooting remained unclear.

"There's a lot of possibilities and we're going to explore all those possibilities. And that's why we're asking for the citizens to help, so we can get the actual circumstances," Mullins said at a press conference.

Suspect information

No arrest has been made and police have not released detailed suspect information. The initial MPD Twitter post indicated the suspect fled the scene in a red vehicle. A later update identified the suspect only as a male in a hoodie.

At the press conference, Mullins said the suspect — or suspects — fled in a dark-colored vehicle.

Police have been searching the area for surveillance cameras and were asking anyone with more information about the incident call the Crime Stoppers hotline. Tips can be reported anonymously by calling 901-528-2274.
