Stirling seek traffic monitoring on Woodlands road after crash

THE City of Stirling is asking police to monitor a Woodlands street after a teenager was hit by a car.

Castle Road resident Greg Odgers captured on his dashcam the moment a car collided with a student riding a bike on Thursday morning.

The Churchlands Senior High School student was thrown over the car bonnet but miraculously stood up and walked himself to the verge.

Mr Odgers believed the boy was lucky not to have been killed and had long been concerned about increased traffic in the area, first lobbying the City for traffic calming measures in 2003.

City infrastructure director Michael Littleton said it assessed traffic on the street after receiving a petition from residents but the resulting information did not warrant any action.

“Since that time, the City has continued to monitor and assess traffic and crash statistics along this road, undertaking a traffic survey as recently as October 2018. While the City appreciates the resident’s concerns, at this stage it would be difficult to justify treatments for this road as the traffic and crash statistics are low,” he said.

Apart from Thursday’s collision, he said there was only one reported crash in the past five years.

Despite this, Mr Littleton said the City would request WA Police monitor and enforce traffic on the road to “help alleviate concerns”.
