As viewers prepare for a final run of BBC's Poldark - here's a look back at some of the most hair-raising moments during the past five years of filming.

From horse riding to boating - there are bound to be some activities in the Poldark filming schedule with risks involved.

Over the course of the series, the stars have been regulars in Cornwall filming scenes of the BBC One period drama based on the books by Winston Graham.

Luckily there haven't been too many hair-raising moments during filming down here - but there have been near misses involving the show's main heartthrob in the past.

Speaking ahead of series three, Turner said: "This series the boys got to do a lot more action with guns. We filmed in this incredible place with a huge moat, rivers and woods. There’s lots of espionage involved. It’s tonnes of fun and great to break it up for Ross.

"I did fracture my hand during a scene with the muskets. In one part, we’re busting into a prison and the cock of another actor’s rifle caught my little finger, pulling it right back. I knew something was wrong straight away – it felt like jelly."

The 35-year-old also got into a spot of trouble in the Cornish sea.

Turner revealed the dramatic incident to Radio Times magazine: "There's nothing like the Cornish sea at the height of winter for putting you in your place.

"We were filming me lifting Demelza out of a boat in the actual sea when this huge wave picked up the boat and slammed it into my head.

"I dropped her in the water - not very Ross Poldark."

He added: "And nobody was coming to see if I'm OK.

"I was the man injured... One of the underwater cameramen got cracked as well and he was concussed.

"These waves, you wouldn't think there's anything to them, but once you get out there you're at the mercy of Mother Nature and she doesn't care how well the previous season rated."

If that wasn't bad enough, Turner was obviously facing other risks from jumping into the sea in the midst of winter - for those hotly anticipated topless shots.

Speaking of those scenes at the opening of series four, Turner said it was “pretty cold” on the day of filming.

He added: “It wasn’t pleasant, no. For a lot of reasons, it wasn’t pleasant.”

The period drama is expected to return to screens next month for its fifth and final series.

Writer Debbie Horsfield has revealed how she approached the new season.

The Cornwall-based Poldark saga was created over 12 novels.

After the seventh novel, The Angry Tide, on which series four was based, Winston Graham left a gap of ten years before the eighth novel, The Stranger from the Sea, begins.

Following the cliffhanging end to series four, there has been international speculation as to where the next series will take the Poldarks...

Horsfield said: "In The Stranger from the Sea, Winston Graham made many references to developments that happened in the 'gap' years.

"Much can also be inferred. There are, of course, also historical events and people of the time, both in Cornwall and in London. Series five will draw on all of these to follow the lives of the Poldarks, George Warleggan, the Enyses, and the Carnes in this intervening period."
