Gritters have been out across Cornwall on Monday night (February 11) as a precaution.

Cormac, Cornwall Council's highways and construction contractor, has confirmed that salt spreading would be taking place on some of the county’s major routes.

It has also advised motorists to drive with care.

There are currently no weather warnings in place.

Temperatures on Monday evening and into the early hours of Tuesday are expected to hover around the 5C mark.

But gritters will be out whenever there is a risk of ice or snow, aiming to apply salt before the onset of freezing.

A Cormac spokesman tweeted: “Gritters will be out from 19:00 across the county on our precautionary salting routes.

“Please drive with care. #CornwallWinter.”

Cornwall Council recently took stock of a top-up delivery of salt from Northern Ireland, which was unloaded at Fowey Docks and transferred to depots across Cornwall.

Cormac carries out precautionary salting on 1,400km of the most heavily trafficked A and B roads which between them are responsible for around 80 per cent of traffic movements.
