A huge sausage dog walk in Truro has been postponed due to the weather.

The gathering of pups in festive outfits was due to get under way on Lemon Quay aat 2pm on Sunday December 23 before setting off on a stroll to Boscawen Park.

It has now been moved to Sunday December 30 at 2pm instead, to avoid the rain.

Organiser Pixie Davis, from the Cornwall Dachshund Walkers group, said she wanted to see as many dachshund owners and fans as possible at the first event of its kind, which is being held to raise awareness of a debilitating spinal disease which affects the breed. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a degenerative condition which can require surgery.

Pixie, whose dog 11-year-old rescue dog Bluebell has IVDD and is transported around in a pushchair, was involved in the world record-breaking gathering of 601 dachshunds on Perranporth Beach in March, said she wanted to bring some of the fun from that event to the city.

"We just want people to come out and support us because everyone loves dachshunds," she said. "Kids can come along and it's just a fun day out to see the dachshund's again.

"We have group walks all the time. We get cars stopping, people filming - we really are a bit of a spectacle. We're having a Christmas party in the week before at Goonhavern Village Hall with Santa coming.

"But this is the first time we've done the Christmas walk at Truro. We've never walked them through Truro before. We've done beaches, roads.

"We just want to put a smile on people's faces.

"The dogs will be in festive jumpers and Christmas outfits; there'll be flashing lights and stuff like that I expect, as they do.

"There should be 100 or more but I'm really pushing it so it could be up to 300. After all 601 were counted at Perranporth in March."

Bluebell, who is black and tan, had an operation for her IVDD about three years ago.

Pixie added: "She's recovered but has never walked properly hence the reason for the stroller some days.

"We're going to raise awareness for IVDD because of the back problems that dachshund's suffer. It will be a chance to meet the cute dogs, learn about IVDD, which affects one in four dachshunds, so some will be in strollers or on wheels on this walk."
