Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman's body was found on a river bank in Truro.

Police officers and paramedics were called to Garras Wharf shortly after 10am after a member of the public made the tragic discovery.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the woman, who was sadly pronounced dead in hospital a short time later.

The identity of the woman has now been confirmed and her family has been informed. Her death is being treated as unexplained at this time and enquiries are continuing.

A large section of the footpath behind the Tesco store in Truro remained cordoned off at around 6pm this evening with police guarding the area.

Officers conducted a widespread search, which included the police helicopter, was carried out throughout the day.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson has said that the identity of the woman "will not be released until a formal identification process has been conducted".

Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed or heard anything suspicious between 6pm on Thursday, March 14 and 10am on Friday, March 15, in the area of Malpas river bank, near Tesco in Truro.
